Happy Times

Our paths collided in the mid 90’s. Peter went to the opening of Oscars and initially met Gary but it was when he returned later and was introduced to Carolyn that the friendship really began. Carolyn loved to come into The Bookstore and would read anything and everything that Peter recommended. Peter and Gary had bonded by then and they all spent time together, a time that Carolyn frequently recalled as ‘The Golden Years’.

I arrived on the scene a couple of years later and three became four. When Peter and I married Carolyn and Gary hosted pre-lunch drinks for us. It was Christmas 1999 and Bowes Road was like a fairytale grotto. Carolyn had done an amazing job as usual, decorating multiple trees and anything else that stayed still long enough! Candles, sparkle, joy! I will always remember the kindness and generosity shown, not just to us but to our friends and family.

Five carefree years followed. Our children had all passed the age where they needed babysitters and we delighted in out-teenagering them. Impromptu Friday nights in Blase, staying up too late, talking, laughing, drinking and listening to music. And how Carolyn loved to dance! Seeing in New Years together, trips away to celebrate birthdays and an unforgettable week in Turkey celebrating Carolyn and Gary’s 25th wedding anniversary. So much love and laughter.

And then life turned serious. Carolyn’s initial diagnosis was unbelievable brutal and nothing could ever be the same again. Her bravery and tenacity in her fight for life (and quality of life) is well documented. She will always have our unstinting love and admiration.

Unique, beautiful, funny, strong Carolyn. You will always be missed.
